Samuel was the son of William Crocker Holway, who along with his brother, Ladwick Holway were prominent local merchants.
William and Ladwick Holway owned a center of coastal maritime trade, Holway Wharf, the remains of which are visible today along the riverside by this property. The Holway Wharf accommodated schooners and cargo ships essential to the area's lumber trade. The floating timber from the upper saw mills (upper Bad Little Falls) was then loaded at the wharf to be shipped along the Atlantic Coast.
